How fascinating to hear from Betty's own point of view some three decades on. I wouldn't wish such a marriage nor divorce on anyone. While most of us will never endure what has happened to the Broderick family, I can fairly say many of us have likely dealt with a narcissist at some point. A malignant narcissist so extreme, that Mr. Broderick took great glee psychological torturing his soon-to-be ex-wife Betty, while encouraging his new and much younger girlfriend, Linda, to do the same. Truly, aren't we ALL a bit green & immature at 22-years old? Of course we are. This is who Linda was from the get-go to Dan, as his new, young and gullible bride-- no different than Betty was twenty years before. We in our twenty-somethings are hopelessly optimistic and terribly naive to a massive fault. It should be noted that a forty year old Dan Broderick on the other hand, was old enough to know better. It goes without saying that death was far too harsh a price to pay. For anyone. And normally, that is where any debate left in this terrible crime would come to a full stop. No excuses. However, I encourage anyone who has ever survived the trauma, yes--TRAUMA, of a malignant narcissistic relationship to read Betty's book. I don't care if that narcissist was a lover, spouse, parent or even a boss. If you barely made it out alive after such an experience, hanging on to some shred of humanity or decency that's got to be out there, somewhere? Then I PROMISE you will recognize yourself in Betty Broderick more than what you think you do, or perhaps are willing to admit.
