I have been a long time doctor aphra fan. I own every single comic that she shows up in, and she has become my all time favorite star wars character, and one of my favorites in general. Needless to say, I was excited for this to be released. I was disappointed, but not because of the way Aphra was written. The issue with this story is the new cast of characters. Compared to the previous stories in the aphra series, these characters are so unbelievably boring. Books 1-5 of doctor aphra introduced so many exciting and colorful characters, and her flame with Magna Tolvan made it that much better. This lacks the creativity of the previous stories, but there’s certainly potential. Right now it feels like a lot of the new characters are different versions of Aphra, and we had enough introspection in the last two books before this. Aphra is a uniquely awful person, so to watch these new characters act out exactly like her was very strange. I don’t want to see everyone else acting like Aphra, I want to see Aphra doing it and watching how other, DIFFERENT personalities react or counter her. And the professor is just a very bland character and I’ve grown tired of the angry ex trope. We saw enough of that with Sana, which I’m still awaiting to be expanded upon. I didn’t care about Aphras history with the professor the way I did with Sana, because she was just a boring character. We get it, Aphra pisses off the women she dates. It’s especially sad to see an attempt to put her story with Magna behind her. Their relationship still has so much untapped potential and was one of the best parts of the previous books. There is so much more there to expand upon. The quest they were on was extremely cool, however, and Diluth was an amazing planet. The planet was nothing short of creative, and I wished we could’ve seen more of it. I’d definitely recommend this comic to any doctor aphra fans, but lower your expectations. I never write reviews, but Doctor Aphra is a character that I have been in love with since her very first appearance in the Darth Vader comics, and one that I feel passionate about.
