Some would say that every garden might fit the definition. This book leaves no stone unturned (so to speak) in its exploration of the question. It has been useful to me in my work as a landscape designer. Indeed, there are several theories about the way to create places that promote positive feelings, particularly for people in various challenging circumstances. The authors explain these theories and present a great deal of research, some done by them, more of it done by others in a variety of settings worldwide. They offer numerous actual examples and the experiences that have arisen from them. The book is more academic than casual but is easy enough to read. At this price point, it is probably best suited for thelandscape professional or a classroom setting. I recommend it highly to anyone who is going to design therapeutic spaces,would like to understand the power of landscapes to affect feelings or behavior, or who is interested in the principles of place-making in general.
